Unlocking data accessibility to boost deep renovation in Europe’s building sector.

The EU building stock accounts for more than a third of total energy-related emissions, with residential buildings being the main contributor. Around 75% of these buildings have poor energy performance.  To address this significant challenge, the EU has introduced initiatives such as the Fit-for-55 package and the Renovation Wave, which aim to accelerate renovation rates and improv energy performance. By promoting deep renovations, the EU seeks to decarbonise the building sector, reduce energy consumption, and enhance overall sustainability.

To transform the building sector, the EU emphasises the need for easy-to-use and reliable tools, as well as accurate data. The Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) supports this through Article 14, which is key to making informed decisions. These initiatives focus on improving data accessibility, providing financial support, and encouraging the use of innovative technologies to enable informed decision-making and ensure the success of renovation projects across EU Member States.

About RE-LIFE

The ReLIFE project aims to make high quality data more accessible in the EU building sector. We are creating an easy-to-use, open-source platform that acts as a central resource for important information about buildings in Europe, including financial and technical details. This platform provides different groups—like financial institutions (e.g. banks), energy service companies, and building owners—share information more easily. Our ultimate goal is to increase the rate of major renovations in homes, helping to create a more sustainable and efficient future for all.
